What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is primary health care without the use of drugs or surgery. It is a distinct branch of medicine that utilizes the body’s healing abilities and nontoxic natural therapies. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are trained in conventional medical treatment and diagnosis. However, much greater emphasis is placed on natural healing modalities.

Naturopathic education equips physicians with a wide variety of tools such as homeopathy, nutrition, botanical medicine, oriental medicine, hydrotherapy, ayurvedic techniques, pharmacology, physical medicine and lifestyle counseling. This eclectic toolbox of knowledge allows for precise personalization with each patient.

Naturopathic medicine works well with today’s standard medical model. In cases where drugs are absolutely necessary, NDs will write prescriptions (in some states), or refer the patient to a conventional Medical Doctor (MD). Your ND will work closely with your primary care physician or other medical specialist to coordinate your care when necessary. Naturopathic medicine is the perfect mix of tradition and innovation. It should be incorporated in the long term wellness and disease prevention strategies for both children and adults.

We offer in-office visits or long distance phone and video visits for those patients who may find it more convenient.

Naturopathic Philosophy

The main difference between Naturopathic medicine and the current standard system of medicine is the philosophy. While a conventional medicine MD (Medical Doctor) works against the body to treat disease with primarily drugs and surgery, Naturopathic medicine goes beyond that, to support the body and treat people instead of treating symptoms or diseases. A licensed ND (Naturopathic Doctor), practices similar to the ‘old-fashioned’ type of doctor. A lot of time is spent getting to know each patient, their lifestyle, family history, daily schedule, dietary intake, habits and sources of stress. They use standard lab tests, specialty lab tests, special physical exams, and most importantly, the patient’s experience to help determine the main cause of disease. A typical Naturopathic prescription will generally include lifestyle changes and education to help each patient improve their long-term overall health, not just their current symptoms.

Naturopathic medicine is based on six philosophical principles:

  1. First Do No Harm (Primum non nocere) – This emphasizes the preservation of life and health and discourages the use of toxic drugs with dangerous side effects.
  2. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis medicatrix naturae)– God provides everything needed for restoring health in our bodies in
  3. Discover and Treat the Cause (Tolle causam) – Treating symptoms will never restore true health. Health is only achieved by finding and addressing the root cause of disease.
  4. Treat the Whole Person (Tolle totum) – It is impossible to treat one area of the body without affecting another. Everything in a single individual is connected.
  5. Doctor as Teacher (Docere)– The main goal of a Naturopathic Physician is to teach patients how to get well, stay healthy and prevent disease.
  6. Prevention is the Best Cure – Not getting a disease is always better than treating it, hence disease prevention is paramount in every case.
